Keep the load balancer. The issue for you, I think, is how you replicate your HTTPSessions across the members of the cluster.
This is most likely determined by the web/app server you are using. The container that holds the state will most likely have a defined way to replicate session data, either by writing it to a common database or using UDP to multicast data across the cluster.
