I installed it using the installer I downloaded from here : http://ruilopes.com/elasticsearch-setup/
Since that also installs it as a service on Windows. (I am using the 64 bit version.) Everything else seems to be working fine, the status is green and I can use sense to run queries, but I just can't seem to install any plugins. Thanks for your Help !!
