hmm.. java 6 allocated more than 8GB of heap... you saying you have 64GB for the es instance?! java 6, iirc still using cms as the gc, when it exceed >12GB, I started to see strange phenomenon.
Also, what's your segment size? Check your log if you have the exception pool rejection something, if it is , just increase the index/bulk queue.
