After going thru posted messages I noticed a posting referring to
Lowenthal (Loewenthal) families and Lowisohns. My great
grandfather's family came from Elbing. Their last name was LEWISOHN
altho the spelling varied in different records and was sometimes
spelled Lowisohn. It seems to have varied with whomever wrote the
records, probably the rabbi - sometimes spelled with an "n", "v" in
place of "w", etc. The family members I have managed to locate in
the US used Levison.
At least one Lewisohn (Phillip) married a Lowenthal (Marianne)- they
lived at 69 ? (unable to read street name). There were Lewisohns in
Elbing as early as 1815 - the first birth record I found was from
that year for Boas, born to Lewin and Esther Isaac. Lewin is my ggg-
grandfather. His address was 9 Nuetliech? (I can't find a record
where I can make out the spelling of the street name) His son Isaac
lived at the same address when he and wife Fanny Arnheim are having
children. His son, Moses, was my gg-grandfather - I can't make out
the streetname but the number was 5.
My cousin will be visiting Elblag in May. Is there any way of
locating information that might help him find the current street
names for these old street names? I believe I can find help that can
help me translate the old street names. Do any old structures remain
in existence? It sounds as tho his hope of finding gravestones is
out.
