I got confused since behavior has changed from older ELDK versions:

k1:/tmp$ eval `eldk-switch.sh -r 5.6 armv7a-hf`
Setup for armv7a-hf (using ELDK 5.6)
k1:/tmp$ arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc x.c
k1:/tmp$ eval `eldk-switch.sh -r 5.8 armv7a-hf`
Setup for armv7a-hf (using ELDK 5.8)
k1:/tmp$ arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc x.c
