I have had exactly the same experience with KX1 #368. The AF gain has been getting very noisy over the past couple months. I also keep it in a Pelican case. I have been meaning to ask about it also.
Otherwise I have had a lot of fun with this radio. For example, just the other day I went to a park overlooking lake Ontario during the lunch hour and worked France with a wire in tree running 2 watts.
