C22 and the 4 MHz oscillator is used when you calibrate the K2. First you set C22 using CAL FCTR, then you run CAL PLL and CAL FIL so that the MCU can learn about the BFO and PLL reference oscillator settings by "comparing" those to the 4 MHz oscillator. The rest of the time, C22 and the 4 MHz oscillator is not used as a reference oscillator, so nothing happens when you change C22.
