WG4S mentioned a dilemma I have had many times over
the years. Even with readily available receivers, I
can't really judge how I sound to myself "locally" all
that well. I always want to hear myself over an RF
link. I can always hear artifacts of keying or 'phone
adjustments better when there's a few miles of tropo
path ... no, I don't know why.

The best way I've found is to simply ask a local ham
to listen for me on 80/75 or 10 groundwave, depending
on the time of day.

In the case of WG4S, there are 22 other listed hams
just in his town alone! so, doing this should be a
snap for him. Call one, and set up a time so that
either the transmissions can be recorded or, even
better, simply have the other guy (or gal) hold their
telephone up to the speaker! Members in our local
club do this sort of thing regularly. In fact, lately
we've been meeting in the evenings on 28.170 with slow
CW for the newbies who want to just improve their
code. Nice, quiet groundwave on an otherwise dead
band is great for this!
