How about reducing the depth of the stock KX1 cabinet to a minimum, such that no batteries fit. Then engineering a "piggy back" case to fit (snap, plug, clip,...) on the back of the KX1 that truly seperates batteries from the radio electronics? This could be made an option, perhaps with AA or AAA cells, or even some exotic Li Ion flat pack, or?...
This way you could use the "internal" batteries, or leave the battery pack/case at home and use external power via connector. Just my $0.02 worth...
