Bill,

Look for an efficient speaker, and a 4 ohm impedance will give you twice the
audio power vs. an 8 ohm speaker.  Most common speakers are 8 ohm.
 P=V^2/R - the driving stage determines the V^2 value (the LM380N is really
a special high power op amp with a low output impedance, so the voltage
developed at the output does not depend on the load until the load
resistance is very low), but higher resistances mean less power will be
developed across the speaker.
