I use both stepper motors and selsyns here for remote
tuning applications.

I prefer the selsyns, but they are harder to come by. 
Besides the simplicity and torque, the selsyn has the
advantage of haptic feedback.

By far, the smartest way to turn a stepper is found in
this article, on line:

No RFI, no electronics to fail, no microcontrollers to
program.  I have nothing against microcontrollers, but
to have to write a computer program to turn a motor
is, well, ummm, at least a violation of the KISS
principle.
