Mine does a similar thing... though with headphones, the volume level is plenty loud with the pot pointing to around "9 or 10 o'lock". With an external speaker I need to crank it around to about "3 or 4 o'clock" (and it's very exponential in this region as you mention). I'm using iPod headphones, and an MFJ ClearTone speaker as an external speaker. Not sure what the impedances are offhand. Worked 18 stations in 12 U.S. states on the KX1 last night from 4 W to a 28-foot long wire tossed in the tree. I'm totally new at QRP and love every minute of it. This KX1 is fantastic!! I'd like to see a few refinements but I suppose everyone has a "wish list" for that sort of thing.
