Thanks, Lyle, your comment led me to take another look in the manual. Now I think I get it: In either SSB or CW mode the KDVR3 gives you the ability to record 90 seconds of audio using the AF REC and play it back with AF PLAY. In CW mode, the REC and M1-M4 buttons utilize the 8 CW memories. In SSB mode they provide for record and play-back of voice messages.
