Ron, If the "F" you are referring to flashes every few seconds (replacing the "c"), then you have Fast Play turned on - see page 103 in the manual. I don't believe any character can be displayed above the mode indicator.
On your sidetone problem check your firmware level - if is version 2.04P (hold any button in when turning on the K2 to see it displayed briefly), then you most likely have the sidetone source set wrong. It must be set to U8-4 for K2s above SN 3000. To change the sidetone source, first set the menu STL parameter to something reasonable, like 25, then enter the menu for STP - hold EDIT to edit the parameter, and then tap DISPLAY to toggle the sidetone source. When you hear sidetone, stop tapping and exit the menu. Note, if you have firmware version 2.04r, the sidetone source cannot be changed and you have a hardware problem.
