I'd be tempted to call it compression (or expansion, depending which part of the screen is being treated) someone will throw another into the pot no doubt.
David G3UNA Guy - I'm not sure what you would call it, but the purpose would be to provide more screen real-estate for the small signals, at the expense of the large signals. This would be very valuable on a small display, such as the P3.
