Hello Sam, life is too short and I heard 40 m has been good recently. The K3 is illegal in Thailand; only the K2 is type approved. A borrowed Ft-757 DX plus some wire to the balcony does not even bring up the BBC on 6.195 sending from Singapore! To operate, I need to go to HS0AC, the club station. There they have many antennas and transceivers. K3s would make all the difference for the October WW contest and a multi op set up...
If money is tight, get the low power version. A friend aligned the SWL White Mountain SSB kit for me and worked France and Greece with a few W from DL on a vertical. That was 2002. You will have fun with a K3 and there is nothing like using a high end transceiver! Regarding CW, practice it several times a day, when you can. And get on the air! I'll do that later today. My first QSO after years was posted on the DX cluster and went badly. The next one will get better. A K3 would surely motivate you to master CW! Lots of understanding QSO partners out there - check it out! I've a tendency of getting confused about what I really want and need. so I end up buying transceivers like a TS-430 (yesterday). Much better to focus on quality, not quantity. Get the best! ** I would buy the K3 with low power but the ATU and a 400 Hz filter for CW. Ask yourself, would a beginner pass up the chance to practice driving a Porsche 911 just because he has yet to take the test?
