John, I believe you have caught a different bug. The usual failure is that the headphones still work, but the speaker does not - sometimes the speaker stays on even though the headphones are plugged in.
It sounds like you have just lost all audio, and the reason for that can be widespread throughout the receiver. Does the S-meter move? If so that rules out a failure prior to the 2nd Xtal filter. A signal generator and a 'scope would be helpful for your Receiver Signal Tracing (see Appendix E in the manual).
