It is not unusual for newer microphones to separate the microphone shield/ground for Audio from the DC ground used for Push to Talk (PTT) switching. Bob Heil's Heil wire (microphone cable) has a shielded conductor for the microphone audio and outside that shield are a red and blakc wire for the PTT (red +; black for ground or -) http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/parts/26454065.html For your Icom SM-8 wiring project to your Elecraft K3, I would like to make one recommendation. Leave the Icom SM-8 microphone connector as fac tory standard ! BUILD an adapter cable with an 8-pin female Foster (circular) connector to connector your Icom SM-8 and an 8-pin male Foster (circular) connector for connecting Elecraft K3. http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/parts/micconn.html Heil Sound's quality 8-pin male Foster (circular) connector ! http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/parts/4065.html Greg w9gb ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dean" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, October 09 , 2010 07 :06 P M Subject: Icom SM-8 Mic to K3 Need wiring advice I have a new condition Icom SM-8 Base Microphone, that I would like to wire to my Elecraft K3. I have the wiring diagrams for both microphone and radio, but the Icom diagram (and schematic) shows a separate mic ground and regular ground and I am not sure how to handle that. If anybody has experience wiring this mic, your help would be appreciated. Thanks!
