Mark, That was my situation for receiving UPS/FedEx when I was a bachelor and at work. My solution was for delivery to made to my workplace. I let others at work know I was expecting a personal shipment to arrive so they would sign for it if I were out. Also, I developed a good relationship with my UPS driver over the years where I had many UPS deliveries for work. I had to inform him not to drop anything at my old workplace after they laid me off. In my case, the driver has the same delivery area to my home.
I would not be too comfortable with a very expensive shipment being dropped off at my door without someone home (signature or not). Signature ensures for Elecraft that the intended individual receives the shipment and is proof of delivery in case of any dispute with the buyer (just good business practice). This protects UPS from bogus insurance claims, too. I sell some things overseas on e-bay and always insist on signature. In some countries mail theft is a big issue. And I suppose it may be in some areas of the USA. I was home the day my K3 (4043) was delivered. It as Christmas that day (My wife informed me that was my next ten years Christmas present). 73, Ed - KL7UW ------------------------------ Message: 18 Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2010 19:59:50 -0500 (CDT) From: [email protected] Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!! How do they expect a working person to be at home when UPS delivers to get a signature??? When I ordered the rig over the phone nobody told me that this is the way they ship. And to boot, I would have to drive over one hour to a UPS delivery center to pick up the radio. I certainly hope they will call me tomorrow and straighten this whole mess out. This certainly does not give me a good impression about the company. Just venting!!!!
