Mike, wasn't it Winston Churchill who described dangling prepositions as 
something "up with which I will not put"?

To be serious for a moment, there are some verbs in which the addition 
of the preposition results in quite a different meaning - put up versus 
put up with is a good example.  I would prefer to call these compound 
verbs and make an exception for them.
