Don, There are a few features of the K3 that might affect this.
CW on the K3 normally uses the lower sideband. If you were listening on USB, the CW equivalent would be CW-REV. In SSB modes, the K3's dial displays the suppressed carrier (BFO) frequency. In CW, it displays the actual signal frequency, which is offset from the BFO frequency by an amount equal to the sidetone pitch you have selected. For example, if you were listening to a CW signal in USB mode with the radio's dial set to 14010.00 kHz, then to hear the same CW signal in CW-REV mode with your PITCH setting at 600 Hz, you would set the dial to 14010.60 kHz. You could also listen to the same signal in CW instead of CW-REV, but unless the signal was zero-beat to your sidetone, you would hear it at a different pitch (pitches above 600 Hz in USB would be below 600 Hz in CW mode, and vice versa). On the other hand, if you were listening in LSB mode with the dial set to 14010.00 kHz, then to listen to the same signal in CW mode (or CW-REV with possibly altered pitch) you would change the dial setting to 14009.40 kHz. There is a configuration option to automate offsetting of the dial frequency when you switch between CW and SSB modes: select CONFIG:CW WGHT and tap the 5 button to switch between normal (dial setting does not change when you change modes) and offset (dial setting changes so you can listen uninterrupted to the same signal) modes. If you are using software to decode CW, you should also be aware that when the K3 transmits CW, it always does so with an offset equal to the selected sidetone PITCH, regardless of where your software is decoding. In other words, if your PITCH setting is 600 Hz, then to receive on the same frequency you are transmitting on, you must tune your radio so that the signal you are listening to has an audio pitch of 600 Hz, the same as the sidetone pitch. The K3 has tuning aids to help zero-beat CW signals (CWT and SPOT). 73, Rich VE3KI On Fri, Dec 24, 2010 at 2:00 PM, [email protected] wrote: > I am trying to set up to listen to CW on the K3 using software to help > decode messages. > > The question that I have is why can I hear the CW in USB (20M) fine > and nothing when I go to CW mode. > > I have looked in the manual and other references but nothing makes > sense to me. > > Merry Christmas > > Don > KD8NNU > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[email protected] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
