Whups, I meant to say a radiator length down to 1/4 wave will work FB when used with a matching network (tuner) that brings the system to resonance instead of 1/8 wave. 1/8 wave will certainly work, but with significantly reduced signal strength. The field strength from a 1/4 wave radiator is less than 3 dB below a full 1/2 wave radiator - really not a major difference.
