Many, many years ago (yes, I'm that old), all transmitters were crystal controlled. And in the mid 50's when I got my Novice license, it was an FCC requirement that the transmitter be crystal controlled. The crystals were and are referred to as rocks since they're made of quartz. There are still a few QRP kits available that are crystal controlled. For example, I'll be using a Wilderness Radio "SST" which is crystal controlled on 14.060.
