Al the more reason to use only the tip and the sleeve. The K3 jacks are 'stereo', which indicates that a stereo cable will work just fine and cause no additional problems. Since the K3 does not use the ring contact, it makes no difference whether the tip and ring are connected or not - the K3 ignores the ring contact.
I am not certain about your situation, but as I understand,in the case of the CM500, the tip is the active AF signal, and the shell is the return (ground). The mono input of the K3 rear panel mic jack will work just fine as long as bias is turned on.
