Thanks for all the answers.

I was most curious as to the filter width (cursor) and the signal after the 
filter.  Thus, my setup question/or premiss was setting the stage for my 
ultimate question on the filter.

So, what I seem to be understanding from these answers is that the filter width 
itself does not affect the display of the signal I am seeing.  Thus, if I am 
looking at a 6 KHz wide signal and I apply my 400 Hz filter, the 6 KHz signal 
displayed on the screen it left alone and unaffected by my filter choice other 
then the fact that the cursor itself has changed size.
