Hi Geoffrey, Perhaps the ARRL Handbook, Chapter 15 - "DSP and Software Radio Design", might help? Section 15.6, in particular describes the math behind calculating the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) portions of a wave form.
As for specific device compatibility with particular software packages, the release notes for the software should list the hardware it will work with.
