John, Sorry to hear that your 8640 is nearing its end.
My recommendation (and my personal preference) - hang onto the HP8640 for as long as it works - in the available signal generator field, it cannot be beat for low phase noise along with a well calibrated output attenuator. Sure it takes a couple hours for it to stop drifting, but the other factors make it a very worthwhile tool for the workbench. I now have 2 HP8640's, but I have ordered the XG3 because it is convenient and will be the "workhorse" of the workbench signal generators. But when it comes down to applications that require no leakage, and well calibrated output levels down to -140 dBm (and below with in-line attenuators), you can bet that the old '8640 will be my generator of choice.
