If you look at pictures of the old 707 or 720, you'll often see a "stinger" pointing forward from the top of the vertical stabilizer. This is an HF antenna.

There was often a stinger pointing aft on a wingtip of a 747 (before the 400 series aircraft). This, too, was an HF antenna. The 707-style system worked pretty well; the 747-style had a *lot* of static due to bleed-off from the aircraft. The antenna became an extension of the airframe static dissipation system. This was (and is) a poor location...
