For a number of years on the Friday beginning the ARRL and CQ 160 contests I walked across the field behind the house in the direction of JA, unrolling a 5K foot spool of #18 enameled wire onto the top of the snow. It seemed to do a reasonable job of receiving. After the contest(s) I'd roll it back onto it's spool.
Then snowmobiling became popular .... 73!
