In that regard, a lot of folks seem to forget about a little item in Part 97 of the FCC rules:
Sec. 97.313(a) An amateur station must use the minimum transmitter power necessary to carry out the desired communications. But then again, when I was a kid I remember my dad scratching his head in amusement over a couple of local fellow hams running their Collins kilowatts on AM... to talk across our small town.
