Our target is 5 W at 9.6 V (NiMH pack). Nonrechargeable lithium AAs or  
fresh alkalines provide more than this, and of course you'll get 10 W  
or greater with an external supply. Currently we hit 15 W on some  
bands with a 14-V supply, though we'll probably reign this in to 12 W :)

The radio will continue to function down to 8 V--useful in an  
emergency--but with greatly reduced power output.
