64 bit Windows 7 drivers seemed to have the problems (true for many things other than Prolific USB chips). The newest drivers for 64 bit W7 work for my old Elecraft Prolific cable, and I now use it for various chores. Before the problems were solved though, I gave up and put in a PCI express serial card into one of the video slots which I will never use, and ceased to have problems of any sort.
