Iain (and all), 5 to 7 bars on the ALC meter is for voice. For data modes, the target is 4 to 5 bars.
The onset of ALC is indicated by the 5th bar - below that, the "ALC" meter acts like a "VU" meter to allow you to adjust the level. If you do not provide sufficient audio to the K3, you will experience "power creep" because the K3 tries to increase the power output to the level you have set on the power knob. When operating data modes with the K3, ignore the age-old advice to adjust the audio level to control the power output - that advice may work with other radios, but just will not work with the K3 (nor the K2) - adjust the audio level for the proper input and use the K3 power knob to set your desired power level. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/5/2011 7:15 PM, iain macdonnell - N6ML wrote: > What do you mean by "ALC goes wild" ? 5-7 bars on the ALC meter is > your target.
