Ed, Definitely something wrong. How is your mic plug wired? You should have the AF connected to the tip and the AF return (or shield) connected to the shell.
If it is connected as a balanced microphone with the AF connected to the tip and AF return connected to the ring, and a shield connected to the shell, connect the ring to the shell. The K3 mic input is unbalanced.
