Hi, all concerned: I'm glad to report that the problem seems to be cured.
I saved the params with the K3 utility. I performed an EE INIT, which by itself eliminated the syndrome. Then I reloaded the saved params. Syndrome returned. To be thorough, I downloaded and re-installed RV4.39 f/w. Hand-fed the params, did the cals in the book, saved another params file, and things seem to be back to normal. I notice that the EE INIT leaves frequency memories intact. Keep those easy fixes coming! Thanks to all who responded.
