Jim, The rear mic jack itself is stereo, but the signal path is mono - which means only the tip and shell are connected in the jack (no connection to the ring). OTOH, if the mic plug is stereo and connects only to tip and ring instead of tip and shell, then there will be no connection for one of the plug wires.
