Kieth, It would be prudent to put in a very good lightning protection system at the remote station. If done properly, operating during a lightning storm is possible, but that degree of protection takes a lot of effort and expense. Few ham installations have that kind of protection, but broadcast stations do - they have to keep working despite lightning strikes. Done correctly, everything is raised to the same potential and no damage occurs.
