I'll just add in my 2 cents worth here too. I've been using an Outbacker Perth Plus as a mobile antenna for the past 5+ years and have been VERY satisfied with the results. I run mostly 40 meter CW while I commute but occasionally work 20 CW and even once in a blue moon SSB on 20.
The rig is a Yaesu FT-100D running 50 W and the antenna is mounted to a trailer hitch mount which is welded to the frame (thus a good counterpoise). On 20 meters I have 15 countries on CW and I have worked ZS6 and a a VK on SSB. On 40 meters I get excellent results and have worked most of the DXpeditions and regularly work most of what I can hear. Based upon my results, I would certainly look at the much larger (12 foot) Outbacker Outreach ( 500 W version) antenna and one of their tripod mounting systems. The antenna is a bit pricey at around $450 but based upon my resluts with the Perth Plus, I'll bet the performance on 160 - 6 meters is excellent. The tripod mounting system is nice too because it can be folded up and put back in the house, RV etc. and thus can be used anywhere and it should provide a descent ground counterpoise and a mounting system all in one. I plan on purchasing one of these systems soon so I'll let you know when I get it on the air.
