Polarity of resistance checks do not normally make a difference because you are probing a pure resistance. Circuit checks are different because there are actually active components that will act differently depending upon the polarity and magnitude of the voltage applied by the DMM. This is also the reason that Auto-Ranging is not recommended. Use the correct range for the expected reading and readings will often look closer to what the manual indicates.
