When using the M>V, the VFO-B display area shows the memory number and the name you have assigned to that memory location. Rotate VFO-A and you will see the display change to each of your memory locations. It starts at location 01. The number section flashes on mine also, probably just a visual cue that you haven't selected a memory yet.
