Yes, this would be a very good first thing to look at. The K3 has a very good and very flexible audio system, and any mic that isn't "broke" can be easily made to sound very, very good on the air. No outboard equalizer is necessary (or even beneficial). I suspect something fundamental and simple is wrong, like this, or a connector that is wired wrong.
