Bill, There are ways to send CW in SSB mode. But aside from that...
In SSB mode the standard filter width is around 2.7/2.8 kHz so the signal you heard was somewhere in that range. When you switched to CW mode, the normal bandwidth changed to 400Hz and you station was somewhere outside that range. I suggest that if you are going to listen to CW, you set the DSP bandwidth to something in the order of 1000Hz, and to allow a lot of signals into the bandwidth. Once you determine which signal you want to zone in on, tune until his pitch is near your preset sidetone (nor around 700Hz as I remember). Now you can turn the DSP bandwidth down to narrow in on the desired signal, and you can copy easily. To really get close, press the [CWT] button and that does two things. First, it activates the CW tuning aid on the upper meter scale. Just tune till the vertical bar "|" is directly under the "cwt" indicator, now your sidetone should be correct and you have tuned to the other guy's frequency. Second, it allows you to tap the [SPOT] button and if you're close to the other frequency, it will automatically tune the radio to his frequency. I've had my K3 since August of 2010, and I'm still learning. Have fun, and "See you on the radio". ...bill nr4c -----Original Message----- From: Bill Miller [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, April 06, 2012 11:26 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [Elecraft] CW mode question I just acquired a K-3 and have spent an hour getting somewhat familiar. I tuned 20 M and heard a nice DX station at about S-6 using the USB filter setting. I realized I can only transmit CW with the mode set to CW. When I made the change however, I could not hear either the DX guy (gal?) nor the other in the QSO - I heard both with the SSB setting. Gotta be a way to bypass what seemed like attenuation, right?
