In about 1999 or 2000 the FT-817 came out with an entry price of 
$799.  The KX3 (kit) is $899.  That is an increase of 899/788 = 
1.13  or 13% over ten+ years.  Sounds close to inflation for the period.

I sold my FT-817 to buy the KX3 as it looks to be a much superior 
radio.  It cost me about the same for mic and CW filter for the 
FT-817 as those are for the KX3.  I like the modularity concept 
offered by Elecraft as I can "build" the radio to suit my goals 
without buying stuff I do not need.

I'm sure there may be cheaper mobile HF rigs...you get what you pay 
for (at least that is true with Elecraft).
