I found the same as you with the bright OFS/B LEDs. This may sound cheesy, but the best fix for the LEDs might be to simply cut out a small circle of adhesive-backed semi-transparent filter material and stick it on. I think I've seen an Avery-type label that would be perfect (downside: you have to buy a bunch of labels). It might diffuse the light nicely too.
The punch for punching paper to go in a 3-ring binder could do a clean job on the circle and should be just right for size.
