Mike, I picked up on your "horrible antenna" words. Yes, with no antenna, or a "horrible antenna", you may hear some VFO tuning noise in the KX3, but that is usually covered up by band noise with a normal antenna connected (except on 6 meters and maybe 10 meters where the band noise is low).
You can use the menu VFO NR on bands where the tuning noise is a problem.
