I've been whining about this since 'day one'. I've fiddled with the menu setting to no avail. When the audio gain is set at 9:00 to accomodate headphones (Sony MDRV-6s), I must turn the level up to 10 for either internal or external speakers, and even then it's barely adequate. (My hearing is good.) I've always thought that the spkr amp didn't have enough gain. I'd be willing to change a feedback resistor to increase it. It's my only remaining 'complaint' with the K3.
