You want exactly the opposite to see weak signals. The scale setting is the DIFFERENCE between the top and bottom of the display. 150-180 dB is very INSENSITIVE. You want a very SENSITIVE setting, but no so sensitive that it gets blown away by big signals and noise. I usually set my scale at 42 dB for contests, where there are a lot of very strong signals, and at 24 dB for routine operation. I find that 24dB shows weak signals that I can't hear It's VERY important that AVERAGING be ON, and set for it's highest setting.
