In the past I extolled virtues of speech processing in KX3 but it seems that this was premature.
In a number of SSB QSOs, KX3 was not too strong despite setting COMP to the max and MIC GAIN to a few bars. Many marginal QSOs in portable situation where an extra few db would help quite a bit. LP100 has a measurement of avg to peak power. K3, my standard of comparison, can approach -7db. KX3 does between -11 and -13db. Strangely, K2 was better at -9db. In comparisons, K2 sounded stronger than KX3. So KX3 has an extra potential of 4-6db. So speech processor in KX3 appears to be unfinished. Not much difference between CMP settings of 20 and 30 (max). In contrast, K3 sounds good at COMP of 20, has contest/DX quality at about 28, and anything above 30 is way too much. Any comments? K3 with earlier release of firmware also had a weak speech processor. After a fix to firmware, K3 is now a very efficient SSB radio.
