I, too, have not been impressed with the NR algorithm in the K3. However, with the latest firmware 4.51 I have noticed a distinct improvement in the ALC action as well as the NB and NR in the K3. I use both for SSB and CW in working DX and find noticeable improvement in S/N. I use NRmF5-1 most of the time with AGC DCY SOFT, AGC HLD 0.20, AGC PLS NOR, AGC SLP 008, and AGC THR 012. With these settings in my K3 I have been very happy. Of course the CW Text Decode doesn't work as well as it has in the past, but Wayne and Lyle are working on this. I have own a FT5000 and found it to be a very excellent performer. I, too, think the NR in the FT5000 works better than the K3 but I found the 5000 clumsy in other areas and did not like the size, weight and band scope in the yaesu rig. I sold the FT5000 and went back to my K3 and have been a happy camper since. The great thing about Elecraft is that Wayne and the crew will continue to make the K3 and the NR better and better and I will be able to make the modes and improvements myself and put the radio in my 'Rose' case and haul it off to Hawaii every February just in time for the ARRL CW World Wide contest.
