One thing I tried during a recent contest was to set FAN CTL = 1 during the contest, or at least whenever I was CQing. The noise level stayed constant instead of jumping up and down with the PA temperature, and a constant noise level is easier to cope with. Outside of contests, I set FAN CTL = NOR, because the fan rarely if ever comes on then.
